Sad animes or sad movies in anime format are the most popular category amongst the fans. The way artists narrate the story in this genre is something everyone should take inspiration from. Japanese creators have made something that people in other industries struggle to create and still fail. Everyone is in despair because of some of the characters that anime creators have created.
Itachi, Kaneki, Guts, and Diavolo will give you sadness and depression that you will need time to recuperate from. The misfortune of this blog, sadly, is that it's not about the sad character but about the movies. So allow me to present to you 10 underrated Sad anime movies that you might have missed.
Every day in the anime community, people are looking for either movies or series to watch in the sad and emotional genre. During which we have managed to carve the surface of it, but the real deal is still unearthed. So, in today’s blog, I’ll be counting 10 such anime movies that aren’t talked about most.
1. Pom Poko (1994):
Plot: The story revolves around the year 1960. It focuses on a group of Tanuki who are threatened by a gigantic suburban development project called New Tama, in the Tama Hills on the outskirts of Tokyo. The development is cutting into their forest habitat and dividing their land. The story resumes in early 1990s Japan, during the early years of the Heisei era. With limited living space and food decreasing every year, the tanuki begin fighting among themselves for the diminishing resources, but at the urging of the matriarch Oroku, they decide to unify to stop the development.
2. hotarubi no mori e (2011):
Plot: It tells the story of a young girl named Hotaru and her friendship with Gin, a strange young man wearing a mask, who she meets at the age of six in a mountain forest near her grandfather's country home. Hotaru learns that her friend is supernatural and that touching Gin will cause him to disappear forever.
3. Spirited Away (2001)
Plot: 10-year-old Chihiro becomes trapped in a forbidden world of gods and magic when her parents take her to investigate the other side of the tunnel. In order to survive, Chihiro must work and make herself useful, and find within her the courage and resolve she needs to save her parents and escape from a world where humans are despised.
4. Your name (2016)
Plot: High schoolers Mitsuha and Taki are complete strangers living separate lives. But one night, they suddenly switch places. Mitsuha wakes up in Taki’s body, and he in hers. This bizarre occurrence continues to happen randomly, and the two must adjust their lives around each other.
5. Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)
Plot: High schoolers Mitsuha and Taki are complete strangers living separate lives. But one night, they suddenly switch places. Mitsuha wakes up in Taki’s body, and he in hers. This bizarre occurrence continues to happen randomly, and the two must adjust their lives around each other.
6. Arrietty (2010)
Plot: Arrietty, a tiny teenager, lives with her parents in the recesses of a suburban home, unbeknown to the homeowner and housekeeper. Like others of her kind, Arrietty remains hidden from her human hosts, but occasionally ventures forth from beneath the floorboards to borrow sugar cubes and other supplies. A secret friendship forms when 12-year-old Shawn meets Arrietty, but their relationship could spell danger for Arrietty's family.
7. From Up on poppy hill (2011)
Plot: It's 1963 and Japan is in the midst of swift modernisation, leaving behind the Second World War's painful memories and focusing on a brighter future, symbolised by the coming year's Tokyo Olympics.
8. Only Yesterday (1991)
Plot: Unmarried career woman Taeko Okajima (Miki Imai) takes her first extended trip outside her native Tokyo when she travels to rural Yamagata to visit her sister's family during the annual safflower harvest. On the train, Taeko daydreams about her pre-adolescent self. As her vacation progresses, she has extended flashbacks about the frustrations and small pleasures of her childhood, and wonders if her stress-filled adult life is what the young Taeko would have wanted for herself.
9. When Marnie Was There (2014)
Plot: A young girl is sent to the country for health reasons, where she meets an unlikely friend in the form of Marnie, a young girl with flowing blonde hair. As the friendship unravels Marnie has closer ties to the protagonist than we might expect.
10. The Wind Rises (2013)
Plot: Unable to pursue his dream of becoming a pilot due to his eyesight, Jiro strives hard and draws inspiration from Giovanni Caproni. Soon, he builds two fighter planes that are used in World War II.
