Why Is Virat Getting Selected For Team India Even After Performing Consistently Poorly? |
He who once was known as the king now seems to be struggling to retain his stature.
Once, he was compared to Sachin, who is now not even close.
Once, someone who was meant to break all the records of top scorers is now not even scoring.
There’s a great saying by Green Gobling which goes like this: "The one thing they love more than a hero is to see a hero fail."
Every day, we see people on the internet criticizing Kohli for his poor performance and demanding that he be dropped from Team 11.
Despite the criticism, neither Kohli nor Team India are giving up.
So the question arises due to that, why? Oh Why! Virat is chosen for Team India despite consistently poor performance?
Before we get into why here is his previous year's performance by cricmetric in respective formats:
TEST:
ODI:
T20I:
In all of these formats only T20I is showing some great stats for King but others are plummeting. Even after that, he managed to get selected in the above 3 formats, and here’s why:
Fitness:-
Rahul Dravid, aka Mr.Wall, once said, "You don’t win or lose the games because of the 11 you select." You win or lose with those 11 on the field. "
Virat is in better shape than any other player on Team India right now. Even if he’s not scoring well, his fielding makes up for it.
He’s maintained himself consistent in his fielding. He is number 6 in the most catches by players in the ODI format list on espncricinfo. Even if you can not rely on his batting, you can certainly count on him for his fielding ability.
Experience:
Justin Langer once said, "Experience tells us that few matches are won on the back of one or two good sessions of play." To win a test match, most teams have to win and outplay the opposition for extended periods of time. "
As one might expect after reading, this quote is about a test match, but understanding it may make a difference.
Cricket is an unpredictable game, but experience can give you a certain advantage.
Virat has been Team Captain and Vice Captain. Conditioned under MS Dhoni, who we all adore for his captaincy.
As Red Skull once said, "I guide others to a treasure I cannot possess."
Virat has learned many things from him, said by himself. So, even if he isn't a captain, his experience can help the current India team.
As most of the players are young guns and surely Rohit Sharma will be there, but Virat's being there will boost the morals for the rest of the players and his encouragement towards the players, as we have seen, is overwhelming.
So even though he’s struggling, he can still help others with their strategies.
A Good Player Cannot Be Benched:
MSD once said, "Loss makes you humble." It tests the other batsmen and bowlers. Also, if you keep winning, you don’t know what you need to work on. "
Every cricketer, be it a batsman or a bowler or a keeper, has been through a rough patch at a certain point in their career.
Now, in these phases, it is more crucial for the boards to back their star players. Because one's form cannot recover from not playing, one must fall repeatedly before walking and leaping for a run.
Based on that conundrum, the boards never take off their good players as they have the ability to shine even in the darkest days and soon will virat do the same as we all wish.
So it’s only fair that the board lets him play until he gets his boost back.
The above three reasons are more than sufficient to understand why the BCCI still wants him to play for Team India, but some claim that dropping Virat would result in brand endorsement, but is this true?
No, because in the end, Virat is just another spoke on the wheel who would be replaced by someone better such as Rishabh Pant or Hardik Pandya. So, no, brands will not have any effect on BCCI. Most brands that endorse Kohli want to have their impression on India, so they would likely go with the next best thing after Kohli is gone.
